10 Week Mixed Medium Classes
Due to the move, the description has not been updated. Programming will be similar to the 2011-12 season. Please call Meghan at 717.279.1802 for updates.
The focus of the mixed medium classes has undergone a bit of a change this year. In the past, much of the inspiration for our art making came from children’s literature and more specifically the illustrator’s style, theme and art medium of expression. If your family is still interested in enrolling in a class similar to this one, please see “The Art Reading” classes for School Age Children.
The 2011-2012 themes for both classes and for all three sessions will be “Our Local Community”. We will look to be inspired by the people, places and environment that make up local landscape.
Some of the processes we will explore will include; drawing, painting, sculpting, printing and mixed media (The use of many art media or mediums in one finished piece of artwork.)
An additional opportunity that will be afforded during this class is that each 10 week session will include a minimum of one optional field trip. Possible trips may include a visit to a local art exhibit, a creative arts focused community volunteer opportunity or a visit to a local artist’s studio.
“Learn To Think Like An Artist”
Ages 6-10 – 5:00-6:15 p.m.
This class is designed to provide children with an opportunity to experiment with a mix of mediums (art materials). The children will be introduced to specific art methods and art materials. There will be lots of guided choices given to establish a foundation of art skills to foster creative confidence.
We will explore the elements of art like; line, shape, color, texture, form, space and value. The kids will be encouraged to think about the elements of art similarly to ingredients for baking. The use of a specific element of art or baking ingredient can have a direct impact on your end result. Even though we like the sweet taste of sugar, if we use too much it will not produce a pleasing cookie. Likewise, the use of too much paint, too much of one color or too much glue, well it may not be what we were looking for.
This is how we learn to think like an Artist. Whether an artist is a professional or an avid hobbyist, they too must problem solve and make discoveries about what works and what does not. It is through trial and error that new ideas are born. The artwork produced in this class will be as individual kids enrolled.
Session III: Thursdays, March 21 thru May 23, 2013
Tuition: $138 per 10 classes (Enroll 2 children in same class and receive sibling discount.)

“Mastering Media”
Ages 10-17 – 6:15-8:15 p.m.
This mixed medium class is for the kid who just enjoys creating and exploring new ways of making artfully created objects. During this two hour class, we will look at art, talk about art, and enjoy lots of time sharing ideas and creating new ones.
The Principles of Design will be presented throughout the year for the student’s consideration. They are; balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, repetition, proportion, rhythm, variety and unity. Understanding the application of these design principles will enable the kids to better master the media of their choice.
Student participation in this class is highly valued as each participant is recognized for their individual creativity. The art projects planned for this class will be open ended allowing the kids to recognizing that they have choices in how they decide to develop their artwork. The goal of developing these critical thinking skills is ultimately to foster the kid’s confidence in their own self expression and aid them in finding their own style.
While most materials are provided, at times the kids may be asked to bring a few things from home (of course, with parent’s permission) to personalize their work.
